デコトラ Dekotora means “Decoration Truck”, also sometimes called アートトラック Atotorakku or “Art Truck”. You’ve seen ‘em, you love ‘em, they made you say WTF that’s crazy. They’re those freaked out rolling light shows you see in pix from Japan, sometimes lurking about in the background in Daikoku Futo shots. They date back to the mid 70s and were first popularized in the 1976 film トラック野郎 Torraku Yaru “Truck Guys”. Sit back and enjoy the acid trip.

バニング（Vanning）at it’s most basic it’s just customizing a van such as the Toyota Hi Ace and Nissan Caravan. This trend among Japanese enthusiasts is said to actually have it’s roots in the american custom van wave in the 70’s. Only it wasn’t just a passing trend in Japan and they’ve had a few decades to evolve it to it’s most extreme, and like other fringe auto trends such as Bosozuko style their efforts to go bigger and crazier with each build has resulted in some truly outrageous creations. So when you see these monsters lurking in photos from Daikoku and think “what will those crazy Japanese come up with next!?” remember this automotive subculture is their take on the good ol’ american shaggin’ wagon.
You know I love bosozuko cars, the crazy flares and camber, the pipes, the sharknoses… this one takes camber to a whole new level, I can’t even wrap my brain around how it’s driveable.
